In the process of shield tunneling soft and hard inhomogeneous stratum, the cutter plate is subjected to non-uniform load such as bias load and stress concentration, which causes local damage to the cutter plate and abnormal tool wear, especially the uneven force phenomenon of the oversized diameter cutter plate is more significant. In view of the above problems, a method of calculating the cutter disc forces for shield tunneling in soft and hard composite strata is proposed by focusing on two main characteristic variables, namely, bearing capacity tolerance value and area ratio of soft and hard composite strata. Based on a very large diameter shield tunnel project, the method is used to calculate the force of soft and hard composite strata on the cutter disk, and further obtain the overall stress and strain distribution law of the cutter disk combined with numerical simulation method, and then propose a reasonable value of the total cutter disk thrust for overloading the cutter disk. The calculation method not only reflects the characteristics of the coupling action between the soft and hard composite strata and the cutter tool, but also facilitates further calculation of the overall stress and strain distribution of the cutter, determines the cutter thrust, and avoids excessive local force on the cutter.
