Abstract:The congestion problem is prominent of arterials, where the transportation status calls for an improvement. Signal coordination is an effective way to alleviate the operation problem on the arterials. However, previous studies focused mainly on the single efficiency optimization or safety evaluation. Based on the data of arterials from Taiyuan, an estimation method of Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) from the detection of GPS data is proposed in this paper. Meanwhile, the software of VISSIM and Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) are presented to simulate the traffic status of arterials. In order to assess the performance of comprehensive optimization for signal-coordinated arterials, in this paper, the delay and queue length of vehicles reflect the traffic efficiency variation and the traffic conflicts reflect traffic safety characteristics. Results indicate that compared with the previous status, the comprehensive optimizing degree of the isolated and signal-coordinated control model is improved by 18.9% and 26.1%, respectively, which verifies the effectiveness of signal coordinated. The comprehensive evaluation of the paper serves to provide countermeasures for the operation, planning and management of arterials under coordinated signalization.
