Abstract:Amounts of parapets on the building roof were collapsed during the Ms 4.4 Yanhu earthquake in Shanxi Province. The collapsed parapets hurtled the peoples on the ground lead to a relatively sever hazards compared to the same small magnitude earthquake. The characteristics of the parapets on the building roof was summarized and the simplified model was proposed based on the seismic damage. The unreinforced brick manometry parapets with a lower height could been taken as a rigid nonstructural component, which collapsed with two stages from the bottom mortar failure to the rocking. A set of 32 strong motion records during 4.0-5.0 earthquakes were selected, and the seismic fragility analysis of the simplified model carried out. The results showed that the overturning probability of the example model is 80% under the 0.5g peak ground acceleration excited building. Most of the buildings in villages are 1-2 stories with a relatively short fundamental period. The seismic dynamic response of the building with a short period may be amplified the acceleration and velocity, which may lead to a sever damage of the parapets on the building roof. It should be concerned and reinforced the parapets is located at the edge of the roof with a vulnerable fragility although the lower value of the nonstructural component
