Abstract:Most ground fissures in Xianyang city develop along the Weihe Fault. Some experts attribute the occurrence of ground fissures to fault activating. In order to clarify the relationship between ground fissures and groundwater exploitation in Xianyang city, the dynamic change of groundwater level in the overpumping area was analyzed. According to the survey on historic and current situation of groundwater exploitation, and collecting of year’s observation data of groundwater level, the qualitative relationship between groundwater exploitation and ground fissures in Xianyang city was achieved. During the rapid decline period from 1986 to 2006, the groundwater level dropped by 11.4 m, many ground fissures were formed and developed quickly in this time. While from 2006 to the present, the groundwater level started to rise slowly, and the ground fissures came into stable stage. It indicates that the ground fissure activity in Xianyang city is consistent with the changes of groundwater level caused by pumping in time. On the other hand, the spatial distribution of ground fissures is also consistent with the groundwater depression cone. Ground fissures are not developed along the whole Weihe Fault, but along the edge of two main groundwater depression cones. The study has a good instructional significance to grasp the genetic mechanism of ground fissures in Xianyang city, predict their developing trend, and carry out the prevention and control work of ground subsidence and ground fissures.
