The direction finding performance and pattern synthesis of 8 units’ circular array, which is composed of directional elements of planar Archimedean spiral antenna, are studied in this paper. First the radiation characteristic of single planar Archimedean spiral antenna as a basic element of circular array is analyzed and its pattern synthesis is simulated. And then the circular array’s pattern synthesis characteristics are introduced in detail. Compared to the 8 units’ isotropic array, the directional array’s side lobe level is efficiently decreased by using the planar Archimedean spiral antenna as the basic element of the array and the circular array’s pattern synthesis characteristics are also greatly improved. Finally the direction finding performance of the directional array based on the MUSIC algorithm is discussed and the numerical simulation results are given.
